When Bad Covers Happen to Good Books

Let me preface this post by saying, "No.  I am not going to tell you the book to which I'm referring."  I will say that it is not a recent release.  At all.  Like not in the last ten years.  The author is one I respect and admire.  She's a fabulous writer.  It's a great book.

It's a horrible cover.  (Like, cheesetastically bad.  Even ten years ago.)

I picked the book up this week in the library because I've enjoyed some of her more recent work.  And I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.  But it pains me.  To the point that I lay the book on my nightstand facedown.  How many people passed this book over because of its dust jacket?  It looks like an afternoon special exploded all over it.

Oh, but the story!  It's wonderful.  Hooked me from the first page and never let go.

I don't really have a point to this post today.  But I am curious ***without naming any titles or authors*** have you ever almost walked away from a treasured book based on an ugly cover?

  1. I saw a book recently that sounded fantastic but yes, the cover was... not good. I felt bad for the author. I'll probably buy the book eventually, but I think it's sad when the cover shows no hint of the possibilities inside. What a shame.

  2. I don't judge a book by its cover (har, har) unless it seems outdated in style. Say, an eighites style in the modern day. Sounds like this book was that way, so yeah, I would have turned it over on the nightstand too. :o)

  3. I hate ugly covers!!! Bi turn off. Especially the ones with captain macho with his shirt off and hair blowing in the wind...BLECK!

  4. Yes.

And now that I'm in the middle of watching my own (wonderful!!) cover progress, I'm thinking about this all the more...

  5. It really is amazing how much a cover influences my opinion before even reading 1 word. The poor author didn't have anything to do with the design... and I KNOW this.... but what can I say? I'm a cover lover.

  6. I can't think of any off hand.
    But, I'm sure there are.

A really great cover (and title for that matter) make me pick up books I'd not heard of via word of mouth.

  7. I just stumbled onto your blog and I LOVE IT! So creative. Newbie writer myself, but what caught my eye was "Follower of Jesus" because that's how I identify myself on my FB page (instead of Christian.)

Digressing, but to answer your question, I am a definite "judge a book by its cover" girl. I'm sure I've passed up many lovely books that way, but the one that comes to mind is an old copy of "Little Women" in my school library when I was a child. Hideous cover.
