The moment is still fresh with me. That moment when I, in the tiniest peep of a voice, asked my husband if everyone wanted to write a book.
"No, I don't think so. I mean, I don't want to."
So it's not just one of those universal desires you ignore? Shoot.
And now, I can't go back to the time when I thought that 2,000 words would be a good length for a picture book. When I believed "revision" was just something editors would help you do. When I woke up well-rested.
But I wouldn't want to even if I could.
I am a writer.
You Can't Go Back Friday: I Am A Writer.
![]() ![]() My name's Karen Akins. And my debut YA sci-fi novel LOOP is coming out October 21, 2014 with St. Martin's Press. It's all sorts of time travelly goodness. I'm a self-professed geek--also a wife to Hubbykins, a mom to the Pea and Boo, and a follower of Jesus. And, occasionally, I find time to vacuum. I'm repped by the marvelous Victoria Marini at Gelfman Schneider Literary Agency. |

It's a scary, wonderful thing, right? :)
ReplyDeleteYeah sometimes I wonder what the heck I was thinking? Is it possible we are all masochists? Cuz I definitely don't intend to stop :)
ReplyDeleteI really love this! I hear you sista Keep calm and type on!
ReplyDeleteThere is so much more to being a writer than writing a draft of a novel. SOOOOOOO much more! What a lovely post! I love reading a blog post that says a thousand things to me in a few short paragraphs.
ReplyDeletethis made me giggle and then smile and then sigh.
ReplyDeletethanks.
Too true :)
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, there is no going back, is there? But it's so much fun on this sleep-deprived side.
ReplyDeleteSpot on!! I love the picture! :-)
ReplyDeleteYou go, Karen!
ReplyDeleteI love moments like that when you declare who you are, what you do, what you love! You ARE a writer!
ReplyDeleteI love that. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteI second that motion!!
ReplyDeleteFunny about your husband. Mine has two great stories, but he doesn't seem to have the interest or desire to write them. He asked me to do it, but I didn't that his 20+ career in law enforcement would make a good picture book.
ReplyDeleteI love the sign, btw!
Thanks, everyone! I really have found such an incredible sense of camaraderie and friendship in blogdom. I love that I can write a post like this and I don't get a slew of comments along the lines of "nope, you're crazy." :)
ReplyDeleteto stop would anger the voices in my head....yours too :)
ReplyDeleteHeck yes! It's lovely and more than a little scary to say that to yourself.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I thought that about picture books too. Until three years ago I had no idea there were specific guidelines...
ReplyDeleteoh yes!!!!!!!
